Are You Making the Most of Your Chamber Membership?
Joining the Chamber is a great first step. But here’s the thing: simply becoming a Chamber member isn’t enough to guarantee results. I like to think of Chamber membership a little bit like a gym membership. You can sign up, pay your membership fee, get the fancy key tag... but if you never actually go to the gym, you probably aren’t going to wake up six months later wondering where those abs came from. 😂 And unfortunately, Chamber membership works pretty much the same way. Your membership gives you access to the opportunities, tools, connections, visibility, and resources, but the real value comes from actually using them. And just like the gym, consistency matters too. Maybe you showed up to every event for six months. You built relationships, people started recognizing your name and your business, referrals were coming your way, and you were seeing the return on your membership. Then life got busy. You stopped showing up. Eventually, that momentum starts to fade. That doesn’t mean your Chamber membership “stopped working.” It means that presence and consistency are a huge part of what makes Chamber membership work in the first place. The good news? You don’t have to do everything to make your membership worthwhile.
Show up and build REAL connections.
Yes, networking is part of Chamber membership, but we’re not talking about walking into a room, handing out 30 business cards, and hoping someone calls you tomorrow. The best Chamber connections happen over time. Come to an After-Hours. Join us for a luncheon. Grab a seat at a Member Mixer. Attend a ribbon cutting. Have conversations. Ask people about their businesses. Let them get to know you. Those repeated, face-to-face interactions are what turn acquaintances into relationships and relationships into referrals. People do business with people they know, like, and trust. That trust is built by showing up.
Want even more visibility? Host or sponsor something.
One of the easiest ways to put your business front and center is to host or sponsor a Chamber event. Hosting gets people physically through your doors and gives them a chance to experience your space, your team, and what you do firsthand. Sponsorship gives your business additional visibility before, during, and often after an event while also showing your support for the Chamber and the local business community. You’re already a member. This is simply another way to take that membership a little further and make sure people know who you are!
Get involved beyond attending events.
If you really want to build deeper relationships within the Chamber, consider joining a Chamber committee, group, or volunteer opportunity. There is something different about working alongside people versus simply meeting them at an event. You have more conversations. You learn more about one another. You build genuine relationships. And, without even realizing it, you begin creating a network of people who understand your business well enough to actually refer people to you. Plus, you get to have a voice in what your Chamber is doing. Win-win.
And don’t forget about the easy stuff!
Not everything requires leaving your office or adding another event to your calendar. Some of the most underused Chamber benefits are sitting right inside your Member Hub. Make sure your login is active and take a few minutes every so often to check that your information is current.
From your Member Hub, you can:
- Keep your business directory listing up to date so people searching for your products or services can actually find the right information.
- Add your upcoming events to the Chamber Members & Community Events calendars and get them in front of a larger local audience.
- Offer Member-to-Member discounts exclusively to your fellow Chamber members.
- Post job openings for FREE when your business is hiring.
- Keep your contact information, website, business details, and other information current.
These things might seem small, but they add up. And they take very little time!
So... are you making the most of your membership?
You absolutely do not need to attend every event, sponsor every luncheon, join every committee, and log into the Member Hub every Tuesday at precisely 9:07 a.m. to be a “good Chamber member.” 😂 That’s not the point. The point is to find the pieces of your membership that make sense for your business and USE them consistently. Maybe your goal is building referral relationships, so you commit to attending two Chamber events each month. Maybe you want more people to know your business exists, so you host a mixer or sponsor an event. Maybe your schedule makes attending events difficult, so you make sure you’re taking advantage of your digital benefits and keeping your business visible through the Member Hub. Or maybe you do a little bit of everything. There isn’t one perfect way to Chamber. But if you’ve been wondering whether you’re getting everything you can out of your membership, this is your friendly reminder to jump back in.
Show up. Stay visible. Get involved. Build relationships. Be consistent.
Your Chamber membership opens the door. Walking through it is where the good stuff happens. 💙
